A Kyalami Legend.
Jacky Ickx's true Kyalami fame came from taking 4 wins in the famous Kyalami 9 Hour and endurance races. The only driver to have taken more victories in the races history being well known British privateer David Piper (6 wins). Jacky won the 9 Hour race in 1967 and 1968 driving a Gulf Mirage M1 Ford. In 1967 with Brian Redman, and in 1968 with David Hobbs. In 1970 he took victory with Ignazio Giunti (Ferrari 512M)and in 1971 he finished second with Mario Andretti (Ferrari 312P). Jacky again won the 9 Hour in 1982 in the iconic Rothmans Porsche 956 sharing the drive with Jochen Mass. In 1983 the race changed from the 9 Hour to the Castrol 1000 km race. It was then a round of the World Endurance Championship. Jacky and Jochen finished third (Rothmans Porsche 956) with race victory taken by team mates Derek Bell and Stefan Bellof. The 9 Hour, in many ways, defined Kyalami as an international race track. Jacky Ickx defined sports car racing in the 1970's.
